Devotional: The Roaring Lion is Defeated (Part 2)

Christian Women's Devotion on resisting Satan

bar

... Be sober [well balanced and self-disciplined], be alert and cautious at all times. That enemy of yours, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion [fiercely hungry], seeking someone to devour. But resist him, be firm in your faith [against his attack—rooted, established, immovable], knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being experienced by your brothers and sisters throughout the world. [You do not suffer alone.]... (v.8-9 AMP)

So, what steps do we need to take in order to 'resist' the devil?

In addition to what was mentioned in part 1—not buying into the lies of the enemy, standing firm in scriptures that speak of the victory we have in Christ and declaring the name of Jesus over our situations—we also need to be alert and cautious at all times.

This is not to say that we are to be thinking of Satan and demonic forces & influences all the time, so as to be preoccupied with it. No! We just need to be aware and mindful that we do have an enemy who will look for ways to attack, and to stay vigilant, abiding in God's Word (which is a powerful weapon in our hands). If we stay in communion with our Lord and stay rooted, established and immovable in our faith, we will always have victory over the enemy.

We need not have any fear of Satan, because he is our defeated foe. Christ has defeated him through the cross and His resurrection.

It's in our vulnerability and our weakest areas that Satan will more than often attack, so we need to be talking to God about these weak parts of our souls and surrender them over to God. We need to ask for His strength to be perfected in our weaknesses—He has promised in His Word that His strength is made perfect and shows itself most effective in our weaknesses (2 Cor.12:9). Invite Him into those weak areas, into the struggles within, and lean into His strength.

We need to live in complete reliance and dependence on Him. Jesus promised us a helper—the Holy Spirit. We have the Holy Spirit to help us, lead us, teach us, comfort us, speak to us and intercede for us. As we submit to God (yield to Him, especially in the face of an attack or temptation), resist the devil (by standing firm in God’s truth—like Jesus having an "It is written" reply), he will (and must) flee! But we need to be intentional and fervent in this. This needs to be our lifestyle, not just doing it once or twice then giving up!

Satan may be relentless, but with each time of resistance, he weakens more and more. Remember, we come from the place of 'victory', he comes from the place of 'defeat'—and will always, forever more, remain defeated.
