Devotional: Rightly Dividing The Word
Christian Devotion about interpreting and understanding the Scriptures
Think over these things
I am saying [understand them and grasp their application], for the Lord will grant you full insight and understanding
in everything... Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a
workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully
teaching] the Word of Truth. - 2 Timothy 2:7,15 (AMPC)
It’s vital that we're
'interpreting' the scriptures correctly. We need to ask for the Holy Spirit's help in understanding the scriptures
and to lead us into the truth therein. We need to pray that God will open our eyes to see the wonderful truths in
His Word, to open our ears to hear the still, small voice of God and to open our hearts to receive His Word and
to help us apply His Word to our everyday life.
In order to align our
thinking with God's Word, we need to clearly understand it and interpret it correctly—otherwise, we will be
aligning our thinking to a false belief or doctrine. We will end up believing that God's Word is saying something
that it, in fact, may not be saying. This seems to be happening a lot in this day and age. This is why it is so
important that we know the truth of God's Word, which will bring us freedom and transformation. All our thoughts,
ideas, dreams and decisions need to be aligned with God's truth, not to our own understanding of what the truth
is: "Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own
insight or understanding." (Proverbs 3:5 AMPC).
Oh, how we need complete
dependence on God for the understanding of His Word. We cannot understand spiritual truths with a carnal mind.
All scripture is 'God-breathed', inspired by the Holy Spirit, so we must depend on the Holy Spirit to teach us—for
it is He who leads us into all truth! So many can go into error because of wrong interpretation of God's Word, so
it is vitally important in knowing and interpreting the truth correctly—and this comes as we allow the Holy Spirit
to reveal the truth to us as we meditate on God's Word.
