Devotional: Our True Image–Part 4

Christian Women's Devotion on being contented in Christ

bar

Read: Psalm 139:13-16 (NKJV)

...But godliness actually is a source of great gain when accompanied by contentment [that contentment which comes from a sense of inner confidence based on the sufficiency of God]...(1 Tim.6:6)

In summary, what I'm really saying is: our contentment is found in Jesus—not in how we look, how much money we make or the material possessions we have. The source of our pleasure should not be in food or any form of overindulgence. If our contentment is not in Jesus, the things of the world (which are perishable), will fill the void. Only Jesus can give us true contentment.

The number on the scales or tape measure is not what defines us. How we look doesn't define us. The amount of money we have (or do not have), or material toys we possess doesn't define us. Who we truly are is hidden in Jesus. We need to lift our eyes off of ourselves and the things of the world and fix them on Jesus and what truly has eternal value.

Romans 12:2 reminds us to not be conformed to the world's standards, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Yet, so often we seem to conform to what the world says without even realizing it. The world doesn't define who we are, so we shouldn't go along with who it says we should be or what we should look like—otherwise, we will always be lacking. We can't compare ourselves to others because we are all fearfully and wonderfully made in our own uniqueness. You need to be the best 'You' that you can be, and I need to be the best 'Me' that I can be—and we all need to be growing into Christ-likeness, not world-likeness. All of the world's ideology is fleeting and perishable, but God's Word is forever alive, active and everlasting.

[Looking away from all that will distract us and] focusing our eyes on Jesus, who is the Author and Perfecter of faith [the first incentive for our belief and the One who brings our faith to maturity], who for the joy [of accomplishing the goal] set before Him endured the cross, disregarding the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God [revealing His deity, His authority, and the completion of His work]. - Hebrews 12:2(AMP)

Lord, I so often find myself
Conforming to a worldly view,
Please help me know who I am in Christ,
Because I am defined by truth
