Devotional: In The Light As He Is In The Light
Christian Women's Devotion on Living In True Fellowship With Jesus
...If we say that we
have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness [of sin], we lie and do not practice the truth.... (v.8 AMP)
God is light! He is Holy,
His message is Truthful and He is Perfect in Righteousness. In Him there is no darkness, sin, wickedness or imperfection
(v.5). He abides in the light and is the Light itself. He cannot lie and there is no falsehood in Him.
If we are "in Christ Jesus"
then we walk with Him in the light. We have true, unbroken fellowship with Him, and we are cleansed from all sin
by the blood of Jesus. We are washed clean completely! But if we do happen to have a weak moment and stumble in
sin, He has promised us that as we confess it to Him, He is faithful and just, true to His own nature and promises
and will forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (v.9).
Yet, if someone says they
are "in Christ" and have fellowship with Him, but they clearly don't have the lifestyle characterised by faith and are immersed
in the deeds of darkness, they lie and do not practice the truth. It's a contradictory! We can't say we love God
but live according to the evil desires of our flesh, thinking that there's nothing wrong with it—saying that it's
not sin! Someone like this, the Bible says, is 'deluded' and the truth is not in them.
1 John 1:5-8 is clearly
talking about someone who says they have fellowship with God, yet they walk in the darkness of their sin—being
deluded and living a lie. Such a person does not practice the truth and is not abiding in God's Word. Those who
live this way and say they have not sinned, do so because they do not see their sin as sin. They are completely
blinded to the truth and have come into agreement with a lie! And this, I believe, happens because they don't
read the Bible and meditate on its deeper truths, or they do read it, but fail to understand it, or they interpret
it incorrectly. This gives the enemy an invitation to twist God's truth. If we abide in God's Word, we will know
what is right and wrong in God's eyes and wouldn't call what is sinful right and acceptable.
We can't say we have not
sinned when we are living contrary to God's standards. God is the One who says what sin is and we can't argue with
God, no matter what we think about it. We have to accept God's Word on the matter and come into agreement with
what God says, not what we think.
The difference between
someone who says they're walking in the light and someone who actually is walking in the light is how they respond
to sin. The latter will feel remorseful and sorry—grieved at their failure—and quickly confess it to God, giving
it over to Him and asking for His help to overcome it. These are the ones who are truly walking in the light as
He is in the light. But the former won't even acknowledge the sin as sin, and instead claim that they haven't
sinned! There is no remorse or confession before the Lord. These are the ones who are not walking in the light and
are not in fellowship with God.
When we walk in the light,
anything that is not of God will be exposed by the Light of Truth. We need to welcome that, because as the Light
exposes and reveals to us what is not of God, we can be aware of it and seek God's help in "putting it off".
Why not invite His light
to shine into your heart and give over to Him anything that He reveals to you. He will help you with this—and,
in all honesty, He's the only One who can!
Lord God, I come before
you today, asking you to shine your light of truth deep in the core of my being, exposing and revealing anything
that is not of you. Help me, Lord, I pray, to surrender it to you. I invite your healing and wholeness into that
area. Please help me, Lord, to walk in the freedom that you purchased for me on the cross. I pray you will help
me live transparently before you as the Holy Spirit empowers me and enables me to walk in the light as you are
in the light—my thinking and beliefs aligned to the Word of God. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
